Best Car Magazine has released some information on the future Nissan Skyline, and well, this is the future, like it or not. Many countries will not allow anything other than zero emissions vehicles to be sold new. This leaves manufactures like Nissan, little real choice in what the future will look like. Since development cycles in the new car world are 8-10 years in the future, and models will run for 10 years or more, these cars will be sold well into all these government mandates.
Nissan has recently unveiled concept cars, the Infiniti Vision Qe (sedan) and QXe (crossover), signaling a strong commitment to electric vehicles (EVs). While initially slated for a 2025 release, recent market trends have prompted a slight delay to 2026.
The Next-Gen Nissan Skyline: A Battery-Electric Powerhouse
A particularly exciting development is the upcoming all-electric Nissan Skyline. This new generation will mark a significant departure from the traditional gasoline-powered model, offering impressive performance and advanced technology.
The Nissan Ariya: A Global EV Platform

In the car business you use a lot of jumper boxes, jump starters, jumper cables, whatever you want to call them. I have been in/around the car business for all of my 47 years. 30+ years ago we used to have these big yellow roll around jumpers. They had a flag on them, a retractable extension cord. Inside they had a battery. the jumper jaws were also retractable. I liked them. They were a bit unwieldy, but they were hard to misplace. They jump started about everything. Pretty sure we used to lease them, and the companies would service them. The jump boxes were a game changer over using cables on a car lot.
Later on we got to the hand held portable jump starter, and then much more recently the small lithium battery packs. There are two portable jump starter boxes that I have used and like for a semi-professional shop. I mean ones in the $100-$200 range, that will start most things short of a diesel in cold weather. These two boxes are the Jump and Carry JNC660, and the Booster Pack ES2500.
Each has its advantages/disadvantages. I like that the JNC660 can be charged by any extension cord. But its a bit bigger, and unwieldy. The ES2500 is smaller, but requires a specific wall wart, or other method to charge.
Since we use them a lot, we find the limitations. For both the boxes, they have relatively short cables. Short cables are better to get the amperage you need to the car being jumped, but also mean that you often have to put the box on the car/headlight/core support. When you start the car, they often go sliding off. Occasionally you have to drive a car with the jumper box hooked up. So I have seen this many times in the past, especially with racecars, an Anderson SB175 connector.
Tow trucks often use these SB175 connectors on their front bumper, with some long cables to be able to pull up behind a stranded car, and jump start it from behind. I always meant to install one in the race cars we had, would make those starts or even charging much easier, but never got around to it on anything I worked on for very long. It was always about 673rd on the list of important things to do.
The small packs, I have tried a lot, and most aren’t worth a shit to a shop. They are temperamental, and not good enough to start multiple cars over multiple days. Carrying charged with you is ok. Occasional use is OK, but other than that I don’t really want to bother.

Using a 48 volt system the Hybrid GT-R will be able to meet ever increasing and difficult to meet worldwide emissions regulations. There are places in the world where new gasoline cars will be mandated out of existence starting in just a few years. More countries following suit soon after.
The aim is to clear the noise regulations by making the engine sound mild while improving fuel efficiency by covering the torque in the middle range with the motor.
Someone asked me what car I am going to run this on. The funny part was I didn’t have an answer. I wasn’t really thinking about the car, just the system, and trying to make it work. I know the early BAS on the Saturns had issues with belts and tensioners related to start and stop.

So pretty compact, and not that heavy. Weight is always a concern, as we dont want to add any more weight than we have to. You will take away all the benefits by adding too much weight.

A couple things on my workbench at home one day. OEM R32 fuel tank top. Flex fuel sensor. BAS alternator/motor
My wife worked at GM, and she worked on/around the GM BAS system. It’s pretty basic. It’s pretty mild. It was a stop gap type of thing. The part that interested me the most, was that the footprint of the BAS was about the same size as a conventional alternator. That got me thinking.

The RB26 is a small displacement, short stroke engine. It doesn’t make a lot of bottom end. It just doesn’t. You don’t get a ton of torque down low, out of an engine with a 73.7 mm stroke, and a 121.5 mm C-C rod. So, could you take a BAS, add it as an assist to an RB, and have it work from say idle to maybe 3000 rpm or so? Standing on it coming out of a corner, make up for some of that “Turbolag?” Maybe you could even use it a little at cruise? It doesn’t take much horsepower for a car to cruise at a steady speed on the freeway. Maybe it might help improve fuel economy, maybe emissions. Emissions may not be on your mind, but with California regulations, and an engine that never was made for them, it’s always on my mind.
This is more just a brain exercise than anything else. The actual benefits will be pretty minor. I was a gas turbine electrician in the US Navy in a past life. Or rather right out of high school, I went into the Navy and learned about electrical control systems for gas turbine engines. I did what is called A and C School, then about four years on a ship. The types of control systems I worked on are ancient now, but also included things like UPS (uninterrupted power supply).
These early BAS :
in the 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line. The BAS system is also used in the 2008–2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid. It operates similarly to other mild hybrids with a start-stop system, in that it shuts down the engine as the vehicle comes to a stop and instantly restarts it when the brake pedal is released.[1]
The BAS system is capable of providing modest levels of power assist during launch/acceleration and similarly modest levels of “blended” regenerative braking during deceleration. Although unable to operate in pure all-electric EV mode, the BAS system provides improvements to both city and highway fuel efficiency over similar non-hybrid versions. In more powerful eAssist versions, a BAS system can add power to prevent excessive gear changes under variable load. According to the EPA the 2009 Saturn Vue BAS hybrid garners an improvement of 32% city (19>25mpg) and 24% highway (26>32mpg) making the combined economy improvement 27% (22>28mpg) over the base 4cyl FWD version.[2] The system is reasonably simple and inexpensive, making BAS equipped vehicles some of the least expensive hybrids available.[3][4][5]
A 36 volt electrical system (operating at 42–45 Volts) is used to operate a permanent magnet motor/generator unit mounted to the engine in a similar fashion to a conventional alternator. Then through a high-tension drive belt, the BAS system is capable of starting or assisting the 2.4L Ecotec engine. A conventional 12V starter motor is retained and used whenever the engine is cold as during initial start-up. The air conditioning compressor continues to be operated through a belt-driven pulley, but for fuel economy improvement it can be disabled in auto-stop mode if the “ECO” A/C mode has been selected by the operator.
Vehicles with the BAS system use a conventional 4T45-Eautomatic transmission which has been modified to include a more efficient final-drive ratio and includes an electrically driven pump to provide pressure in auto-stop mode.
One perceived benefit of the BAS technology is that it fits in the same space as a conventional engine. No significant modifications were required to the vehicle chassis to accommodate the BAS system, with the 36V battery pack housed in the trunk or spare tire well. This allows the vehicles to be produced on the same assembly line as the non-hybrid versions, producing substantial cost savings and allowing the company to adjust production more easily.
I don’t see using it as start stop, as you need to know the position of the engine to properly do that. An oem or near OEM RB setup, doesn’t really know where the engine is. It would need a dedicated crank pickup, and maybe another cam sensor to really do that. So just a boost in a range is the first ideas for it. Sort of like a nitrous shot. On and off at setpoints. I have the controller, and I bought a Honda Clarity battery pack. 48 v.

I have the service manual for the Saturn Vue Hybrid. I don’t have the Honda Clarity pack information, but its not that complex. Mostly just monitoring the SOC of the battery. I am probably just going to buy a complete used Saturn Vue Hybrid SUV to learn a little more about the system. They aren’t that expensive, and it will be an easy way to look at a functioning system.
If I did want to do a start/stop with an aftermarket ECU, crank and cam pickup, I would probably try and convert the front of the engine to a serpentine belt. My first thoughts were its possible, like anything.
The later version which is called BAS plus, or eAssist is larger, probably wouldn’t fit in an alternator footprint as well is rated : 115 Volt Lithium Ion battery and a 11.2 kW (15.0 hp) motor-generator that delivers 79 lb⋅ft (107 N⋅m) of torque
For now this is not a high priority project. Just something to keep my brain entertained. If you aren’t thinking about new and unconventional things, where are you really?
This was kind of cool. This guy converted an alternator to a motor for his electric bicycle. This video shows some of his struggles.
A few years ago I converted a car alternator into a go kart motor. In this video I build an alternator powered bicycle. I originally tried controlling the motor with a sensorless controller but did not achieve the performance that I was hoping for. After installing hall effect sensors into the motor the results have far exceeded my expectations. The alternator is from a 1998 Ford F-150.

If you are like most of us, and had the glorious opportunity to work on a DIY type electrical installation on a JDM car, then you have found many things that will leave you scratching your head. Scotchlocks are a favorite electrical connector, and shortening wires, seems like it may be against the law in Japan. If you need to fix some of these errors, or have 25 year old connectors that need replacing, we have a few online sources for them.
This is how most JDM cars look, after I have about an hour with them to unfuck the Scotchlocks.
This is a Scotchlock, don’t use it
The issue I have with Scotchlocks, are they are a very unreliable connection. They rely on the cutter on the inside to pierce two pieces of wire to make an electrical contact. You have a very small area of contact, if at all, plus it can actually cut the wire all the way through. Over time, with any bending motion, it will cut the wire, and you will end up with an intermittent connection. These are horrible. I would rather see wires cut back, twisted together, with electrical tape over them, than these. On a side note, wire nuts, are for home wiring, not for your car. On race cars, it is preferred to use a mechanical connector to connect wires, and heat shrink than solder. The problem with soldering wires isn’t the solder connection, but rather the wire leading to and from the connection. They can frey and break over time. Honestly though, you will probably just fine soldering most connections for at least a few years.
Even a solder connection, as experienced by most R32 GT-R owners, can be an unreliable connection at times. We are looking at you- MAF sensors, and window control modules. It is fairly common, on 25 year old cars, to find cracked solder connections on boards. Easy fix, just finding them is the issue.
Techmate is the OEM Nissan supplier for replacement connectors/pigtails in the US. Not every connector is here. You need to know some numbers to be able to get the right connector.
The front corner light, the orange signal light in an R32 GT-R has a unique connector
The front corner lights are retained by a single screw into a thin piece of plastic, and a ball clip. If the light gets loose, it will often remove it self from the car, violently. This normally takes the car side of the harness connector with it. Its just a small 2 conductor connector, but its a no longer available part. So you need to go back and see if you can find that broken up orange corner light, or hope that it stayed on the car. If not your choices are a $70 part from a connector place, or you can just use spade terminals on it. Not the most elegant solution, but its a solution.

Most modern cars use a large fuse to provide power to the vehicle accessories. On the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, there are two terminals from the positive terminal of the battery. One has a easily replaceable fusible link. Even though the lid of the fusebox under hood, shows a 75 amp Main fuse, it is not in the box of an R32 GT-R.
A fusible link is a type of electrical fuse, made from a piece of wire, smaller than the wire it is protecting. The fusible link, can and will deteriorate over time. We have seen some that look fine externally, but you will have odd things happen if the wires are bumped, or if the car is driven.
If you lose the fusible link on an R32 GT-R, you will lose the dash lights, you will lose the ignition coils, but you can still have ECU, fuel pump, and the car will crank over. It just won’t start.
