Nissan Skyline GT-R Transmissions and Upgrades

There were two main transmissions used in the Nissan Skyline GT-R’s from 1989-2002.  The R32 and R33 used a 5 speed transmission from Nissan(FS5R30A), and the R34 GT-R used a 6 speed transmission from Getrag V160(FS6R93A). 
The FS5R30A is very similar to the 300ZX transmission internally. The Getrag is similar to the transmission used in the MK IV Toyota Supra. The input shaft and main shaft are unique to the GT-R on both transmissions, the rest of the internal parts are interchangeable if you have the right version of the gearbox. There were some running changes, and not everything is the same.

Below is some information I have gathered through the years about Nissan Skyline GT-R transmissions. Not all the latest stuff is on the list. There are a few more PPG options now, few more other things you can do, but most of the information is good. All wheel drive cars are hard, hard, hard on the transmission. When the wheels don’t slip, the hard parts break. Third gear is a big one in R32/R33. Bang third gear hard, and it will let go. Some people say the late R33 box is stronger, but I have tried them all, and broken them all. Once, twice in a week in a 500 hp R32 with a nasty clutch(unsprung HKS/Tilton). You want a sprung hub, you want to run Redline Shockproof Heavy gear oil in most trans(not the V160).

The Getrag is loud at idle. The synchros aren’t that durable. Even though the Supra guys run them pretty hard, we break weird hard parts in them. Sequentials take some getting used to. Fun, but you have to treat them like a race box(which they are). They require frequent rebuilds if you are 1/2 way serious. Some gearboxes have helical cut gears, some have straight cut gears.

If its a street car, or you ever really plan on driving it on the street, do yourself a favor, and get helical cut gears. I put about 2000 street miles in an R32 with a PPG trans. Straight cut, dog engagement. The whine from the gearbox cruising on the highway way pretty annoying. Louder than the 4 inch exhaust, and the Weldon fuel pump.  Your mileage may vary, but the pitch and tone of it, isn’t a good sound for a long time. Its 2024, and there are a few more options available, including pure drag race only Powerglides and Turbo400’s. Then there are also DCT and 8HP options.

 OS Giken has several different gearsets available for the R32 and R33 transmission.  Prices range from $2370 to $3350

 The OS Giken kits, are just that kits to replace the gears.  They also have their OS88 sequential transmission .


 What can help a stock geared, or even an OS Giken geared 5 speed transmission, is a billet center plate.  We find that flex in the OEM center plate contributes to failures of 3rd gear.  When anything breaks, is always up to car, clutch, fluid, driver, tires.

OS Giken – OS88 – Sequential 6 speed transmission






The OS88 is comprised of synchro-less helical cut gears and is the perfect complement for a tuned RB26DETT motor. It can be ordered with 4 different sets of gear ratios to suit almost any engine power profile and racing purpose.

Throw Out Bearing Sleeves












Depending on what clutch, and flywheel you are running, you may need a new throw out bearing sleeve for the early, push style clutches. The height listed is from the front side of the fork to the seat position of the bearing.

    Hello, and sorry to bother you with this. I've loved the R32 since i was a child, and this past october I was able to import one (HCR32). It has a stage 3 competition clutch in it, but I wanted to upgrade the transmission because A) it's starting to have issues, and B) im pumping more horsepower into it (550) and im pretty sure im going to tear it up. I saw in your blog the OS Giken and wanted to know if you have any insight into attaching the current clutch to a RWD R34 transmission. I wanted the 6-speed as well as the durability of those transmissions. Outside of aggressive shifting on the street, I dont take it to the track.. it's kinda my baby, and im just making it pristine and picking up that S16 when it comes out. Any help in combining the clutch to transmission would be helpful, or if there is already something that is optimized to drop in that would work for me would be really appreciated. That all has to do with which flywheel, and clutch cover you are using.  Its a bit of a puzzle. Anyone with experience can do it.     I think you might be on some drugs mate, or simply, your crap at shifting gears. I have built for myself and customers multiple R32 and R33 Gtr skylines, running stock 5 speeds well in excess of 900awhp and 9 second passes and have also built several R34 skyline GTR's with the Getrag running over 1100awhp for several years, with no problem, whatsoever!
    R34 Synchros are far more durable then that of the r32/33 gear boxes and yes the Series 3 {97/98} R33 Skyline boxes will see over 900awhp as well and happily live with, serviced well and driven CORRECTLY. 
    you don't need to slam gears to make quick shifts, which seems to be pretty evident if you breaking stock boxes, let alone PPG boxes…..
    something to seriously consider is researching a topic of others experiences before shit canning the boxes, like you inherently have done.
    AWD systems aren't "hard, hard, hard' on the drive line at all, poor driver ability is!
