Turbos are pretty simple machines. They are two fans connected by a shaft. Exhaust energy drives one of the fans, the shaft makes the other fan rotate. Air comes in the center of the housing, and is compressed radially. By adding air to an engine, with additional fuel, you can make more horsepower. More air=more oxygen = more bang. Suck, squish, bang, blow as Mike Kojima would say.
HKS showed their new twin turbo setups in 2021. They tried to have a straighter shot into the turbo and out of the turbo on the exhaust side. Here are a few more pictures of a more complete setup in 2023. The biggest limiting factor on the small twins is the size of the exhaust wheel you can run. The small housings can only take so big a wheel. A wheel of a certain size can only flow so much air. Since the compressor and exhaust are mechanically coupled, when you reach a limit on one side or the other, you are done.

I like the heat shields they are using on the turbo exhaust manifolds. We used a similar setup on Nicks R32 back in 2001. The Wiggins clamps setup looks like the old Aussie touring cars.

Richard Holdener is a beast and I love him, the way you love a man that tests things, the way this man tests things. The first test is single vs twins, Andrew from Motive Video is going to love this. The next test is remote mounting turbochargers. The findings are both interesting. Maybe not what you expect, maybe what you expect.
In this test on an LS V8 engine, his go to engine currently, he tests a 7875 turbo vs a pair of 3582 turbos. He ran them at four different boost levels. A dyno is best case scenario for boost response, as the dyno loads the engine, sort of like torque braking a car. Even though, there is a difference here. All three of these turbos are cheap turbos, but honestly you won’t see much of a spread difference with expensive ones.
Now I don’t want to ruin the video. I want you to watch the video. Lots of information in there, but the conclusion is here:
You can see that the single turbo is making about 50 more horsepower from just after 3000 rpm tapering off till they come together around 4000 rpm. So whats the chart tell us? That the single is more responsive than the twins, by at least 500 rpm. Making pretty much the same power, same torque, over eight runs.
One other interesting note is the heat, heat soak, and some of Richard’s comments about that https://youtu.be/w1uOff1E4u8?t=326 . That is about 5:26 seconds into the video. His comments say that they see a difference in response if they do a back to back pull with lots of heat in the exhaust, vs a “cold” or “idle” pull. So it probably pays some dividends for ceramic coatings, header wraps, heat shielding. Even stuff on the turbo. You really don’t see people use heat shields on twins much, but on singles you do.

So my take away here is that lots of intake piping, lots of intercooler, doesn’t really make any difference in “response” of the turbo on the dyno.

More updates. Did more things, didn’t really post here on the blog about it. So the RIPS assembled RB30 that we got was stock inside (good for lots of power, but we want more than lots), so decided to upgrade it without going all HAM. No billet blocks, no 3.2 strokers. Just stock crank, CP Pistons, some aluminum rods. Had the pistons and oil pump treated at WPC.

When it comes to turbochargers, the bigger the wheels, the more air they move, to a point. Since the compressor wheel is mechanically coupled to the exhaust wheel, and the exhaust wheel drives the compressor wheel, if the exhaust wheel can’t flow any more air, or is in-efficient, then you can’t ingest any more air.
These are pretty huge. 54.1 mm inducer. 71.4 exducer on the compressor side. 56.5 mm inducer and 53.6 mm exducer on the turbine side. In the meat of the efficiency they flow about 40 lb/min airflow at 2.5 pressure ratio on the compressor. Exhaust side with the 0.64 trim maxes out at about 19 lb/min at 2.5 pressure ratio. In theory these should do about 100 horsepower over the GT-RS at the same boost levels.
GReddy introduces a new updated dry filter to the popular Japanese Airinx line. The new Airinx will eventually replace the previous application-specific GReddy Airinx AY-MB and Airinx AY-SM kits with the new Airinx M and Airinx S elements. The larger Airinx M currently comes in three popular adapter diameter sizes: 70mm, 80mm and 100mm. The smaller Airinx S also comes in three popular adapter diameter sizes 50/60mm, 70mm and 80mm. Both sizes include the optional GReddy badge to attach to the side of the filter. These dry filter elements work well for both normally-aspirated and forced induction systems and are easily washable with water and mild detergent.

OEM R32/R33 turbocharger outlet pipe ~54mm at the flange
These parts of the exhaust on a twin turbo RB26 connect the outlet of the turbo charger to the downpipe, or front pipe. Some terms are different, depending on what region you are from. Like calling a soda drink, a coke, a pop, soda, soft drink, etc. It all generally means the same thing, just regional. On the exhaust side, post turbo, the best exhaust is none. Larger is better, less restrictive is better. Less weight is better.
The R32 and R33 outlet pipes are cast, and the same other than the oxygen sensor threads/boss. The R32 uses a small sensor (11/16th or17mm nut), the R33 a larger sensor (7/8th or 22 mm nut). It is possible to put an R32 02 sensor into an R33 outlet with an adapter, but the opposite would be a trick.
R34 turbo outlet pipe ~60mm at the flange
The R34 outlet pipe is a stamped formed piece of metal. It is an interesting piece. It is about 1 lb lighter than the cast pieces, and also has a larger outlet flange diameter of 60mm vs ~54mm mm on the R32/R33. Depending on exactly how you look at it, because the wall of the tube is inside the flange, you don’t get the full benefit of that 60 mm flange. Next onto aftermarket outlets.
You can see on this outlet tube that the diameter of the flange is 70 mm, but because of the tubing wall, you only actually see about 65 mm of cross section. It is still larger than the OEM by about 10 mm.
If you are putting aftermarket turbos on your car, you really want to replace the outlet tubes with something larger and if possible lighter. You also want to pay attention to the front turbo outlet as it just about sits on top of the rear turbo compressor inlet. There is a reason that the R34 Vspec II, got a NACA duct, to try and cool the rear turbo.
