Fighting a Locked All Wheel Drive System in a Skyline GT-R : ATTESA Troubleshooting

Locked up R33 and R34 GT-R all wheel drive system, ATTESA troubleshooting

This one was a bit of an odd one. We had an R33 GT-R that the all wheel drive system, or ATTESA system was locked. Or in other words, when you were driving it at low speeds, the car felt like it had a welded differential. The wheels would hop and skip about. I have felt this before on a number of cars, but for a different reason than this car. If you run an aftermarket ATTESA controller and turn it up too much, you will find that a car will do something similar. However in this case, everything seemed to be ok. No ATTESA codes. So we started troubleshooting the system. Went into the transfer case, touched it all electrically. And in the end, we really couldn’t figure it out.

That is, until Ernie noticed something.

By loosening the lock nut, and adjusting the screw we were able to get the system pressure to relieve. I don’t ever remember reading anything about this. We tried to close the screw back down, and at a point the front would lock up again. We tried the car, drove it on the life, everything seemed good. Next step was to take the car on some drives to check operation. Now here is the weird part, Roberto from Rav Peformance and asked me if I ever had an R33 with a locked all wheel drive system… talk about crazy. So I let him know what we had just figured out earlier in the day. He tried it, and saw the same thing I did. So now we are both intrigued, and cautiously optimistic about the fix.

Today we took a spare ATTESA pump assembly apart and I will share some pictures below.

The filter/screen in the assembly. This is under the solenoid and valve port section.

Solenoids, spool valve, end cap, and port assembly

End of the solenoid valve. This will press against the spool. This is adjusted by the jam nut/ screw

Since there isn’t a lot of information of why this happens, this is my current speculation. This return spring in the transfer case has gotten weak. That way the spring pressure on in the ATTESA pump is enough to overcome it. That is locking the clutches up partially.

I think this spring has got weak.

Locked up R33 and R34 GT-R all wheel drive system, ATTESA troubleshooting

This one was a bit of an odd one. We had an R33 GT-R that the all wheel drive system, or ATTESA system was locked. Or in other words, when you were driving it at low speeds, the car felt like it had a welded differential. The wheels would hop and skip about. I have felt this before on a number of cars, but for a different reason than this car. Can a two wheel drive GT-R be better than an all wheel drive GT-R?
Can a 2wd GTR Be Better than AWD?

Yes, yes it can. At a point, all wheel drive in an A-B drag race on a prepared surface, and even unprepared becomes a disadvantage. Things like weight transfer, drag, the fact that the fast/fast cars just about carry the front wheels out to the 60 foot. Its quicker, but then is it really a Nissan GT-R? The Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 to R34, then the R35 GT-R have all been all wheel drive. They use a system called ATTESA to split the power out to the wheels.

Two T’s one S, but that is getting into pedantics. The advantages of the ATTESA system are that the cars act rear wheel drive until they get some slippage, then the center transfer case starts to lock up, and power is transferred to the front. The issue being the fronts can only really handle so much power. The OEM front diff are open diffs, so in reality, we should say the cars are 3 wheel drive, unless you add an aftermarket front differential. The thing that breaks hard parts just about 100% of the time is wheel hop. When you lift the front wheels off the ground, in a fast/fast all wheel drive car, the parts do bad things when they come down. On the R32 to R34 you want to load the car against the hand brake, with the clutch to take up any slop in the front. If you don’t you can/will eventually spit parts of the front spider out of the case. Dumping the clutch, with not loading it up is a recipe for front diff death. Yes, been there, done that got the T-shirt.

All the fastest drag race cars are rear wheel drive. Its just been recently that any Nissan Skyline that is all wheel drive has broke into the 6’s. The rear drive tube frame cars have been in the 6’s for many years.

George Dodworth is a staple, a hero, and a legend in the GTR community, and after this event he can tack “pioneer” onto his GTR resumè. George made the bold decision to convert his 2009 Nissan GTR (which is famously AWD), into a 2-wheel-drive only setup for GTR World Cup 2021. While you’ll really just have to watch the video to understand the rollercoaster of events that transpired, we can expect that this change will be received with mixed emotions. Sacrilegious to some but exciting for others, regardless George and T1R are taking the inevitable steps required to catapult this platform farther and farther into uncharted territory. George knew it would be a gamble, and at this power level there is no such thing as “things just working right”, but we are happy to say that we are absolutely impressed by what we’ve seen so far. We are very curious to see where the data they gather leads, and we are hoping that TX2K21 sets the stage for some untapped potential!

The first of what we hope is a number of new records this weekend at BDRC round one, our Nissan GTR has reset its own world record with a 7.168 at 209 run, which began with a new personal best 60 foot of 1.208. Axles, driveshaft, propshaft, half shafts, Constant velocity(CV) shafts often all refer to the same parts, but different regions of the world use different terms. To me, we call the shaft that extends from the front or rear differential to each wheel an axle. On the front because you not only have up and down, in and out, but back and forth movement, they have a tendency to wear overtime and split. Once the boot splits, the grease is tossed out, and you will eventually get metal on metal operation and failure.

Split boot on an R32 GT-R front axle

If you take an axle to most decent axle rebuilding shops, they can figure out the boots that you need. They are not anything super unique. Its a little more difficult if you are doing it yourself, and need to figure out part numbers and cross references. Below are the Nissan numbers, and I will fill in cross references as we get them.

Aftermarket Driveshafts and Propshafts.

Some people say that a one piece driveshaft (rear propshaft) in a GT-R will vibrate/shimmy. I have no personal experience with that. Nissan ran a carbon fiber driveshaft in the 400R, and the Z-Tune. ACPT was supposedly the supplier at least for the Z-Tune. We ran ACPT in the R34 GT-R World Challenge race car. On our quest to lose weight this piece lost us several pounds of rotating weight. ACPT was local in Huntington Beach, making using them also favorable.
